Alex Thomas Mechachonis of Granville, MA has gone home, leaving behind a circle of those who loved him.

What follows is a brief look at the life his family wishes to share.

A life is built quietly, day by day.

Alex Mechachonis, 17, of Granville, MA, passed away far too soon on Wednesday, April 28, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of adventure, laughter, and a life lived fully in every sense.

Alex was born in Hartford, CT, and raised in Granville, MA, the beloved son of Alex "Sonny" and Alisha (Russo) Mechachonis. Alex was currently a senior in the Southwick School system and attended Westfield Technical Academy for a time, then decided to finish high school homeschooling.

From an early age, Alex was drawn to adventure. He began horseback riding as a young child and quickly revealed his fearless, daredevil spirit. If something could be climbed, jumped from, or raced, Alex was all in. He loved speed and excitement-whether on horseback, a snowmobile, a quad, ice skates, or eventually a motocross bike. He chased every thrill with determination and joy.

Among other sports, Alex discovered a passion for hockey, playing with the Westfield Jr. Bombers team and playing floor hockey at the Southwick Rec Center. Over the years, he competed with premier teams including MassConn and the Junior Thunderbirds, and later played two years of varsity hockey for Southwick High School. Even as his interests evolved, his love for the game never faded, and he continued to enjoy playing floor hockey whenever he could.

In Fall of 2022, Alex began racing motocross, quickly finding not just a sport but a calling. His natural talent, combined with his relentless work ethic, set him apart. He was selected to be part of the Complete Racing Solutions Elite Team and was a dedicated member of NESC motocross where he won several Championships , as well as the Winchester Speedway. Motocross became his full-time pursuit, and he committed himself completely-training throughout the week and racing on weekends, even traveling to Florida to further hone his skills.

Alex's love for the outdoors extended far beyond racing. He found joy in fishing, hiking, climbing trees, snowboarding, and downhill mountain biking just to name a few. In recent years, fishing became a second passion, and he often brought his fishing pole to races to find quiet moments by the water.

A natural mechanic, Alex loved understanding how things worked. He would take things apart and put them back together, spending hours working on his motocross bikes with his dad and learning to operate the equipment on the farm. He approached everything he did with intensity and curiosity-never halfway, always all in.

Alex also had a deep love for animals. From caring for his chickens, ducks, and horses to spending time with his beloved dogs, especially his shepherd Gunner, he showed patience and compassion. No matter where his travels took him, he always looked forward to returning home to his family and pets.

He was a young man with an old soul-kind, genuine, and easy to talk to. Alex had a way of making people feel comfortable and welcome; when he walked into a room, people were instantly drawn to him. He had a great sense of humor, loved making others laugh, and was known for his playful spirit and practical jokes. He built many friendships throughout his life, but cherished a close circle of friends who shared in his outdoor adventures.

Above all, Alex loved his family. He shared a special bond with his three sisters and was deeply connected to those closest to him.

In his short 17 years, Alex truly lived a lifetime. He was always smiling, kind to everyone he met, hard working, and never judgmental. He was the kind of young man others looked up to-the kind you would hope your own child would grow to be like. His spirit, energy, and love for life will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He will be forever loved and never forgotten.

In addition to his parents, who have an ache in their hearts with his passing, he is survived by his sisters, Holden Mechachonis, Ayla Mechachonis, and Anna Mechachonis; his grandfather, Thomas A. Russo and his partner Johanna Lewis; grandmother, Mary Hawthorne; grandmother and grandfather, Linda and Ken Leifert; his grandfather Alex Mechachonis, III and wife; his nephews, Sonny and Sebastian Costa; his aunts and uncles, Elizabeth and Eric Loney, Katie Hawthorne, Tina and Frank Bonici, Michael and Melissa Mechachonis, and Jonathan and Lisa Hawthorne; as well as many more aunts and uncles, great aunts and uncles, cousins, family, and friends.

His family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 13, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., with a service to honor his life at 2 p.m., at the Lodge Community Chapel, 130 Deerfield Rd., Windsor.

In his memory, those who knew him are encouraged to embrace life with the same passion, courage, and kindness that he showed every day. In lieu of flowers, please only make donations to Alex Mechachonis for the Live Like Alex Mechachonis Foundation, PO BOX 34, Granville, MA 01034
