The family of Donald "Don" Smith of Hoschton, GA announces his passing, and invites all who knew him to remember him here.

A life is more than dates on a stone; here is a small portion of his story.

Memory has a way of softening time.

Donald Erving "Don" Smith, 78, of Hoschton, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 3, 2026. Born and raised in Gainesville, Georgia, Don was the son of the late Jessie D. Smith and Louise Elliott Smith. After graduating from South Hall High School in 1965, Don went on to attend Young Harris College, where he recently celebrated his 50th class reunion, speaking fondly of rekindling cherished friendships. He went on to earn his bachelor's degree from Georgia Southern University. Following in his father's footsteps, Don took over the family business, Jessie D. Smith Nissan Datsun, where he was widely known and earned the affectionate nickname "Datsun Don," a name that stuck for years among friends and customers alike. After selling the dealership, he and his wife, Judy, owned The Cake Box in Gainesville-a local bakery and café that was a nostalgic spot for locals. Known for its pastries, breads, specialty cakes, café, and welcoming atmosphere, it reflected their shared love for people and creativity. In later years, Don transitioned into real estate, where he continued working until his retirement. Don was deeply involved in his hometown. He was a dedicated member and past president (1975–1976) of the Gainesville Jaycees, forming lifelong friendships and contributing his time and leadership to local initiatives. Later in life, Don and Judy made their home in Hoschton, Georgia, where they were active members of Reunion Country Club and the Empty Nesters group. They embraced a vibrant social life. Together, they participated in and performed in community theater put on by the Empty Nesters Members, where Don displayed his musical theater talents, playing the lead role in most productions. They were recognized as "Family of the Month" and "Neighbor of the Year" for their service amongst Reunion members. It is evident that Don and Judy created lasting memories and meaningful friendships in every chapter of their lives. Don had a wide range of passions. He was an avid golfer; in fact, a plaque proudly hangs in the golf club of Reunion commemorating his hole-in-one. He was a devoted University of Georgia Bulldogs fan, enjoyed gardening, and was a self-taught musician; he played the guitar, piano, and even the ukulele, and was rarely without a song to share. A gifted writer, he contributed regularly to the Reunion Patriot, where his words reflected his wit, warmth, and thoughtful perspective on life. Above all, Don will be remembered for his love of family, his storytelling, his humor, and the way he made people feel seen and valued. Don is survived by his brother, J.D. Smith of Gainesville; his son, Britton Elliott Smith (Stacey McGehee) of Gainesville; daughter, Donya Smith Waggoner (Jeff) of Gainesville; (step)daughter, Judy Faith Henson Radosta (Brett) of Hoschton; and his beloved grandchildren: Delaney Little (Zac) of Lula; Aiden Elliott Smith (Hannah) of Savannah; Ansley Radosta of Brookhaven; Robert Radosta (Kasey) of Hoschton; Christopher Radosta of Hoschton; and Ashlynne Radosta (Kaydence) of Flowery Branch. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Ruth Radosta of Hoschton; Campbell Little of Lula; niece, Joanna Smith Nijem (Billy) of Valdosta; and nephew, Brian Smith of Brookhaven. In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his loving wife of 44 years, Judy Ann Fawcett Smith, whom he missed deeply every day since her passing. In a tender and fitting reunion, Don passed away on what would have been their 47th wedding anniversary-a reflection of the enduring love they shared and a day he would not spend without her. Don will be laid to rest beside his beloved Judy at Alta Vista Cemetery. A visitation and celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 9, at Little & Davenport Funeral Home in Gainesville, Georgia. Visitation will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by a celebration of life service in the chapel at 12:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages friends to make a donation to their charity of choice.
