The family of Jim Johansen of Lennox, SD announces his passing, and invites all who knew him to remember him here.

Below, a small portrait of a life that will not soon be forgotten.

A parent leaves not only memory, but the people they helped become.

Jimmy Lee Johansen, of Lennox, South Dakota passed away on April 30, 2026 in Sioux Falls at the age of 70, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories and a legacy of kindness, warmth, and love.

Please join Jim's family for a Celebration of Life at 5:00 pm, Thursday, May 7, 2026 at Jarman Family Funeral Home in Lennox.

Jim was born on September 1, 1955 in Mitchell, SD to parents Dwayne Dee and Shirley (Sorenson) Johansen. After graduating from Brandon High School, Jim settled in the Lennox area, where he met his life partner Karen Criger. Jim worked for Larry's Amoco, as well as Al's Auto Parts and Sturdevant's in Lennox, before taking on his role as a custodian for the Lennox School District. Earlier in his career, while working a delivery route for the Argus Leader, Jim was awarded a Good Samaritan Award for rescuing a girl who had been kidnapped. In addition to his work, Jim was also part of the Worthing Volunteer Fire Department.

Summertime was when Jim thrived – he lived outdoors, finding joy in life's simple pleasures. From time spent tending his garden to the outdoor movie theater he set up, every venture was a reflection of his care and pride. His love of pets and landscaping met when he created a pet cemetery in his backyard. When he wasn't working in his yard, Jim enjoyed camping and fishing, as well as his CB Radio, where he was known as "Nightstalker".

Always a storyteller, Jim embraced adventure and kept things fun whenever he was around. He often carried a camcorder, creating home videos of everyday events, family trips and his kids' school assemblies. Jim's humor and storytelling will be greatly missed by his family and friends, his Pool League, the Breakfast Club at Scotty's Bar & Grill, and all who knew him.

Jim is survived by his significant other Karen Criger; loving children, Samantha Johansen, Jennifer Julius, Gwen Johansen, and Jared Johansen (Rose Owings); his brother Joseph Johansen and sister Paula Johansen; grandchildren, Libby Julius, Morgan Julius, Adicus Arlt, Maclin Johnson, and Tony Johnson; friend Chancellor Bob; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Terry Johansen, and his dear friend, Harold Swenson.

Though he may no longer be with us, his memory will live on in every blooming flower, every warm summer day, and every note of music that fills the air. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
