Parenthood is the slow work of love. Mary did it well.

Mary M. Cook, 65, of Lafayette, IN, passed away on Monday, May 4, 2026 at IU Arnett Hospital with her family by her side after a battle with cancer and lung disease.

She was born on April 9, 1961 in Covington, Kentucky to the late Lester and Ginny (Brumley) Cavanaugh.

Mary graduated from Lafayette Beauty Academy.

On April 28, 1984, she married L. Kevin "Cookie" Cook in Lafayette. He preceded her in death on April 11, 2024.

Mary worked as a hairdresser for over 25 years at Ideal Beauty Shop.

She enjoyed going out to eat and cooking for friends and family. Mary cherished her grandchildren, family, friends, and her dogs, Ellie and Ruby.

Surviving are her children, Lacey (Bri) Cook of Indianapolis, Korbin (Micah) Uemura of Carmel; her bonus child, Alexis Stwalley of Lafayette; her sister, Terri (Tom) Younkin of Lafayette; and her grandchildren, Tre'shon Oden, Anya Hunter, Novi Uemura, and Locki Uemura.

She was preceded in death by her infant son, Ryan and her brother, Michael Cavanaugh.

A Service will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at 2 p.m. at Fisher Funeral Chapel followed by burial in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in loving memory of Mary.
