What you read below is one part of a life lived with quiet purpose.

A name is a small thing to hold a whole life.

Rentha Viola Genies, affectionately known as "Sug," lived a remarkable life defined by love, resilience, and cherished memories. She departed this life on April 23, 2026, at the remarkable age of 99, leaving a legacy that will be remembered for generations. Born on September 18, 1926, in Tobytown, Maryland, Rentha graced this world with her presence, leaving an indelible mark on all who were fortunate to know her.

Rentha lived a full and vibrant life, punctuated by her devotion to family, her passion for personal care, and her delight in simple pleasures. She found joy in styling her hair or having it lovingly done, losing herself in the pages of a good book, and savoring the excitement of television game shows.

Her professional journey was one of dedication and service. Rentha devoted 42 years to the Chestnut Lodge sanitarium, where she worked with unwavering commitment. Her tenure began on February 3, 1948, and after a brief hiatus, she returned on November 10, 1955, until her retirement on January 1, 1993. Her colleagues and patients alike remember her for her kindness, professionalism, and the gentle strength she brought to her role.

Though a private person, Rentha's most cherished roles were those of mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was the heart of her family, a source of unconditional love and support. Her legacy lives on through her surviving relatives, who will carry forward her spirit of resilience and warmth. Rentha is survived by her daughter, Rentha Anne Butler; her grandchildren, Kelli Butler and David Butler; her great-grandchildren, Anthony Edward Butler, Yanaii Wilson, and Calvin Ferguson III "Trey"; her only remaining first cousin, Eleanor M. Genies; her nieces, Towanna Genies and Veronica Wilson (Allen); and her nephews, Thurston Genies (Diana) and Sam Clarke III.

She is preceded in death by her beloved parents, Ida Genies and Thomas "Tom Cat" Martin; her sisters, Rose Freeman and Ruth Genies; her brother, Maurice Genies; her son, Theodore "Teddy" and her treasured son-in-law Edward Bulter. They welcome her home with open arms.

As we gather to honor Rentha Viola "Sug" Genies, let us remember her not only for the years she graced us with her presence but for the light she shared with each of us. Her life was a testament to the power of love, resilience, and the beauty of everyday joys.
