Janice Friedlander of Arlington Heights, IL has gone home, leaving behind a circle of those who loved her.

Behind every name is a life, and behind every life are the people who loved it.

Janice held deeply to the Jewish faith — and was, by all accounts, loved by those who knew her best.

Belief, when lived, becomes a kind of inheritance.

Janice Friedlander nee Benaderet, 75, beloved wife and best friend of David for 25 wonderful years; loving mother of Jessica (Dan) Peck, Amanda (Matt) Shawaker, Barri (David) Bate, Lindsey (Dustin) Worley and the late Matthew Shatzman; loving Grammy of Julia, Natalie and Elizabeth Peck, Jacob and Sophia Shawaker, Joshua and Evan Bate, Brady and Nora Worley; devoted daughter of the late Rhoda and Sol Benaderet; dear sister of Linda Benaderet and David Benaderet (Anne Mariotti); caring sister-in-law of Mark (Kathy) Friedlander; treasured aunt, cousin and friend of many.

Janice was a true trailblazer in her profession, breaking barriers as the first female partner in the Detroit office of KPMG in the 1970s. She brought that same dedication and leadership to her community life, serving the Detroit Jewish community in numerous leadership roles. She was president of Jewish Family Services of Metro Detroit, Fleischman Jewish Home and Aging Services, and Orchards Children's Services, a leading child welfare agency, and she also served as treasurer of the Jewish Federation of Detroit. After moving to Chicago, Janice continued her lifelong commitment to community service as an active member of the Jewish United Fund.

Janice embraced life with enthusiasm and curiosity. She had a deep love for travel, an avid passion for golf, and an unwavering devotion to Michigan sports. Yet above all, her greatest joy was her family. She cherished every moment spent with family, especially her grandchildren, who were the light of her life.

Janice will be remembered for her strength, warmth, and the lasting impact she made on all who knew her. She will be dearly missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to JUF, Maggie Daley Center for Women's Cancer Care, ACLU, and Planned Parenthood.
