Joel Zaczyk of Erie, PA, has passed away, leaving behind a family and community who loved him dearly.
What follows is not the whole story, but a thread of it.
The heart keeps better records than the calendar.
Joel Zaczyk, 69, of Union City, passed away on Monday, May 4, 2026, at UPMC Hamot following ongoing health issues. He was born in Erie on July 9, 1956, a son of the late Michael and Leona (Slomski) Zaczyk.
Joel graduated from McDowell High School in 1974 and continued his education at Tri-Angle Tech, where he studied drafting and design. He went on to own and operate Zaczyk Construction Enterprise for several years. He also served as a building inspector and constable for Union City. Later, he worked as a bus driver for the Fort LeBoeuf School District before retiring to focus on his health.
Joel had a deep love for animals and found great joy in caring for his flocks of chickens, ducks, and geese, as well as taking in animals that found their way to him and giving them safe haven in his home. He also enjoyed building furniture and took pride in the home he built and shared with his beloved wife. Known for his sense of humor, Joel loved telling jokes and bringing laughter to those around him.
Above all, Joel was a devoted husband and father. He shared 50 years of marriage with his high school sweetheart, Diane "DD" Zaczyk. Together, they built a life rooted in love, partnership, and resilience. He cared for her through many challenges, and after her passing, he deeply missed her and looked forward to being reunited with her.
Joel is survived by his daughter, Sarah Benton (Matthew Vosburg); his son, Joel Benjamin Zaczyk (Monica Zaczyk); four cherished grandchildren; six brothers; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
In addition to his wife, Diane, and his parents, Joel was preceded in death by his brothers, Mike, Tim, and Nathan.
