Leonard VanDenHoek of Sioux Falls, SD, has passed away, leaving behind a family and community who loved him dearly.

The chapters of his life were many; these are some of them.

Leonard's children carry forward what was given to them.

Leonard Gary VanDenHoek, lovingly known as "Len," passed away peacefully at Avera McKennan on May 5, 2026, at the age of 84 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Len was born on January 31, 1942, in Douglas County, South Dakota, where he grew up on the family farm and learned the value of hard work, faith, and family from an early age. Those strong roots stayed with him throughout his entire life.

He attended Dakota Christian High School before moving to Chicago, where he drove truck for a garbage service from 1960 to 1961. Len later returned to South Dakota and worked in a variety of positions over the years, including farming, operating a road grader for Douglas County, and working for DeJong Construction. Even through those different careers, Len realized his true passion was in the garbage service industry. He eventually became the proud owner and operator of Dakota Disposal Garbage Service. Len also honorably served his country in the Army National Guard and lived a life rooted in faith, family, service, and generosity.

A devoted member of First Reformed Church, Len was deeply involved in church life throughout the years. He faithfully served as an elder, deacon, and youth group leader, always willing to lend his time, talents, and heart to others. Through his church, Len also participated in mission trips to Jamaica and Mexico, experiences that reflected his servant's heart and desire to help others. His strong faith guided every aspect of his life, and he often reminded those around him, "All is good. Always trust God's plan."

Len was active in many areas of the community, including serving with the Split Rock Fire Department and as past president of the Sioux Falls Garbage Haulers Association. He believed in hard work, helping others, and showing kindness wherever he went.

Family was at the center of Len's life. He was deeply devoted to his beloved wife, Sandra, and treasured the life they built together. Whether traveling the world together, participating in mission work, spending time with family, or enjoying a simple card game with friends, Len found joy in togetherness. He loved hunting and fishing and rarely missed an opportunity to coach, referee, or support the sporting events his sons participated in over the years.

Len will be remembered for his generous spirit, unwavering faith, warm smile, and positive outlook on life. No matter the circumstances, he remained happy, encouraging, and grateful. His presence brought comfort and joy to those around him.

One treasured memory his family will forever hold close is how Grandma Sandy would bring home bread from Subway, and Grandpa Len and Grandma would pick up Bryce, Alexis, and Brooke and head to the park to feed the ducks together. It was in those simple moments that Len's love for family shined brightest.

Grateful for having shared his life are his loving wife, Sandra Kay VanDenHoek; sons, Corey (Laurie) VanDenHoek of Sioux Falls and Chris (Sharina) VanDenHoek of Sioux Falls; grandchildren, Miranda (Adam) Scholes and their children, Alivia and Avary; Heidi (Heath) Thomsen and their children, Aubree, Archer, and Anders; Bryce (Alex) Cook; Alexis (Cole) Newcomb; Brooke (Brennan) Haggerty; Wyatt Witwicki; and Brett Witwicki.

He is also survived by his brother, Nelson (Jeri) VanDenHoek; sister-in-law, Glenda VanDenHoek; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Lyle (Judy) VanZee, Glenda (Bruce) Adams, Merlin VanZee, and Nyla (Kelly) Antonsen, along with many extended family members and friends who loved him dearly.

Len was preceded in death by his parents, John and Nellie VanDenHoek; his brother, Gary VanDenHoek; and his in-laws, Lloyd and Elmira VanZee.

Family will be present for a Celebration of Life Visitation on Friday, May 8, 2026, at Heritage Funeral Home from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
