Marie Mascia of Libertyville, IL, has passed away, leaving behind a family and community who loved her dearly.
What we offer here is gratitude wrapped in remembrance.
Marie held deeply to the Catholic faith — and was, by all accounts, loved by those who knew her best.
The community of faith holds its own well — and Marie was held.
Marie Mascia, 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at her home in Libertyville, Illinois.
Born on July 1, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois, Marie was a longtime resident of Schaumburg before making her home in Libertyville for the past seven years, where she was happy to have found her spiritual home at St. Joseph Catholic Church. She was a former employee of Teletype Corporation, where in 1955, she met her beloved husband, Sam. They shared 66 wonderful years of marriage until his passing in 2022.
She was proud to have raised her family in Schaumburg and was a longtime employee of Jewel Food Store there. She was a fine cook who enjoyed being known for making a spaghetti sauce that no restaurant could top, and for making the best anise cookies that were part of every holiday celebration. She could always be found with a cup of coffee and a crossword puzzle at hand. Scrabble was her game, and she could handily beat any opponents well into her 91st year. She and Sam enjoyed going to "the boat," which was any place with slot machines. But above all she cherished time with her family, who were the center of her life.
She is survived by her seven children: Karen (Greg) Kelley, Kathy (Tim) Dean, Michele (Gary) Deigan, Peggy Passaro, Rick (Sofia) Mascia, Patti (Pat Arwine) Mascia, and Lynn (Ron) Kator; her 12 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Saverio "Sam" Mascia, Jr.; and her four siblings, Joe Scionti, Josephine Perry, Angela Griffin, and Frank Palisi.
Marie will be remembered for her warmth, devotion, and the deep love she held for her family, leaving behind a legacy that will live on in all who knew her.
