Marjorie Ellis of Jersey City, NJ, has passed away, leaving behind a family and community who loved her dearly.
What follows is not the whole story, but a thread of it.
Marjorie held deeply to the Baptist faith — and was, by all accounts, loved by those who knew her best.
What is held in faith is rarely lost.
Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of Marjorie Ellis, a beloved mother, sister, grandmother and friend.
Marjorie was born on June 9, 1935 to Jessie and Alonia Monroe in Jersey City, New Jersey. She was a remarkable energetic and vibrant woman who truly lived life to the fullest-never one to let any grass grow under her feet. She passed away on April 23, 2026 at the age of 90.
Marjorie built a life in faith, community and deep connections with family and friends. She began her career at Western Electric in the 1960s, and years later she became part of AT&T and continued employment there until her retirement. Following retirement, she moved to East Orange, New Jersey.
Marjorie was a devoted and active member of Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Jersey City, and later Metropolitan Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey where she was well-known and deeply cherished. Marjorie's presence was felt throughout East Orange, Jersey City, Newark and West Orange. Wherever something was happening, she was sure to be there sharing her warmth, uplifting spirit, and genuine enthusiasm with everyone around her.
Marjorie remained actively engaged in her community. She participated in the senior group at Metropolitan Baptist Church on Wednesdays, Union Chapel AME and CDC Church on Tuesdays and Bethany Baptist Church on Fridays. She was also known for her generosity, often collecting food to distribute to neighbors, friends and family.
A true go-getter, Marjorie had a passion for travel and adventure. She planned and enjoyed countless trips over the years, including cruises and bus excursions, always eager to explore new places and create lasting memories. Beginning in 2001, she and her daughter made it a cherished tradition to take annual trips together, traveling across the country and around the world. In 2025, to celebrate her 90th birthday, family and friends joined her on a joyful cruise to Bermuda-a fitting tribute to a life full of love and celebration.
Marjorie is survived by her children, Deliacent Womack and Jeffrey Ellis (Vicky); her sister, Dolores Miller; and her cherished grandchildren: Malik and Fatima Muhammad, Jamal (Tracy), Dia (Zakia) and Amir Womack (Leissy), Christopher, Lutfiyyah and Abu-Bakr Witherspoon, Jihad (Tymesha) and Talat Muhammad, Sateena and Traylette Page (Erick). She also leaves behind thirty-two great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, many cousins including Barbara McDonald and Loretta Lee, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Majorie will be fondly remembered by her close friends Barbara Adams, Elise Austin, Gardenia Ballon, Charlotte Palmer, Pamela Williams and a host of many others.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie and Alonia Monroe; her son, Khalid Muhammad; and her sisters, Doris King, Vergis Cason and Gladys Holmes.
Her zest for life, her deep sense of community and her unwavering spirit will be remembered by all who knew and loved her.
