Melvin Eugene Offill of Sumter, SC has gone home, leaving behind a circle of those who loved him.

Behind every name is a life, and behind every life are the people who loved it.

Grief is love with nowhere left to go.

Sumter, SC....Melvin Eugene Offill was called to God's Heavenly Home on Monday, May 4, 2026, at the age of 76, after a long illness.

Gene was born in Milan, Indiana, a son of the late Nelvin Offill and the late Ovie Caudell Offill. He was a devoted member of the Bethesda Church of God and a passionate evangelist who traveled on many missions to serve others. His Bible was never far from his hands, and he found deep joy and guidance in reading it. A dedicated and hardworking man, he spent many years building homes and working in the siding business, taking pride in every project he touched.

He loved the outdoors and found peace in the simple beauty of nature. Some of his happiest moments were spent on his porch, watching squirrels and birds and taking in the landscape around him. A true family man, he cherished time with his loved ones-especially when he could beat them at cards. Competitive by nature, he still never missed a chance to teach, encourage, or share what he knew.

He had a playful spirit and a gift for humor, always ready with a practical joke and a smile. His presence brought laughter, warmth, and positivity wherever he went. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him and by the many lives he touched along the way.

Gene was supported by his loving wife, Brenda Joyce Polston Offill, for 55 years before her passing on July 30, 2024. He is survived by 6 children; sons Michael (Angie) and Shannon (Amy) Offill and Jeffery Polston; daughters Doretta Fernandez (Juan), Julie Offill-Gibson (Thomas), and Amy Offill-Uribe (Tim). He was a fun Grandpa to 24 grandchildren - Kanelia, and Amanda Johnson; Ethan and Sawyer Polston; Adrian, Zacharias, Jake, Maleena (Blake Robertson), Landen, Eden, Taylor, Julie Ann, Sara, Anthony, Jacob, Kaitlyn and Braiden Offill; Lila, Steven and Blake Uribe; Gracie Gibson; and Tyler and Kayley Braun, 2 step-grandchildren, Juan and Asha Fernandez, and 22 great-grandchildren, Kaia and Sean Johnson; Mason, Karder, Joel, Jacelyn, Jayvier, Jordan and Jaiden Steele; Rhys and Orion Schmitt; Alice, Ariana, Parksley, Eli, Ivory, Clayton and Amanda Offill; Israel Vaske, Hannah Norris, Faith Vaske, and Jetson Offill.

In addition to his Wife, Gene is preceded in death by his parents, Nelvin "Nick" Offill and Ovie Caudell Offill, 2 brothers, Melvy Offill and Danny Offill, and a grandson, Kenneth Steele.
