Moore Mortuary & Cremation Services announces the passing of Dr. Castell Vaughn Bryant, who transitioned peacefully from labor to reward on Saturday, May 2, 2026.Dr. Bryant was a woman of extraordinary grace, intellect, and purpose—a beloved mother, devoted sister, and a nurturing presence to many who knew her as family by love, not just by blood. Her life’s work stood as a powerful testament to excellence in education, leadership, and unwavering service to others.A trailblazer and history-maker, Dr. Bryant’s remarkable career in education began humbly as an elementary school teacher, later advancing her commitment to academic excellence via FAMU Office of Public Relations, and as a Chief Assistant in the Office of the President during the Dr. Benjamin L. Perry’s Administration at Florida A&M University.As a proud Rattler, Dr. Bryant’s passion for student success and institutional excellence led her to Miami Dade College, where she rose through the ranks serving as the Director of Student Retention, Dean of Students, and ultimately as Campus President of three campuses—New World Center Downtown Campus, Medical Center Campus, and North Campus. Her leadership helped shape one of the nation’s largest and most diverse institutions of higher learning.Dr. Bryant went on to break barriers as the first woman to serve as Interim President of Florida Memorial University, where she served in the role twice, guiding the institution through pivotal moments with strength, wisdom, and vision.Her distinguished service extended to statewide and national leadership, where she made history as a member of the Florida Board of Governors during the administrations of Governor Jeb Bush, helping to shape policies that impacted higher education across the State of Florida. She also served in the United States Department of Education during the administration of President William ‘Bill’ Clinton, contributing to national conversations and initiatives surrounding education and student success.Dr. Bryant’s leadership extended across multiple institutions, including service as Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs at Bethune-Cookman University, where she played a vital role in strengthening academic programs and institutional effectiveness.Perhaps most notably, Dr. Bryant served as Interim President of Florida A&M University, becoming the first woman to hold that position. Her tenure marked a defining moment in the university’s history—one characterized by dignity, accountability, and a deep commitment to academic excellence and student empowerment—unapologetically.Throughout her life, Dr. Bryant championed access, opportunity, and educational equity, inspiring countless students, educators, and leaders. She carried herself with a quiet strength and a servant’s heart—lifting others as she climbed and ensuring that pathways to success were widened for generations to come.Born and reared in a Christian home in Jasper, Florida, Dr. Bryant earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from FAMU in Library Science and Adult Education respectively. She later earned a Doctorate in Vocational/Adult Education from Nova Southeastern University. She completed her Post Doctorate at Harvard University’s Management Development Program. In previous years she also attended Lewis College of Business, Detroit, Michigan, and Florida International University.Today, we pause in reverence for a life well-lived and a legacy that will continue to echo in classrooms, campuses, and communities for years to come.At this time, we respectfully ask the public to honor the privacy of the family as they navigate this difficult season of bereavement.
