It is with sorrow and gratitude that we mark the passing of James Richard "Jim" Torsky of Polk City, IA — sorrow at the loss, gratitude for the life.

The following words honor a life that mattered to many.

James spent his working life as ['software engineer'] — and was, by all accounts, loved by those who knew him best.

Family is the thread that runs through every story.

James Richard Torsky, 57, passed away on April 28, 2026, in Polk City, Iowa. A visitation will take place from 2:00-5:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at Iles Sundberg Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Madrid. Jim will be interred in Polk City Cemetery at a later date.

Jim was born on August 19, 1968, in Des Moines to Richard and Wilma (Coffman) Torsky. He was a graduate of North Polk High School. He continued his education at Missouri State University and later graduated from Grand View University. Jim built a successful career as a software engineer, where his intelligence, dedication, and problem-solving skills were deeply valued.

Jim had a lifelong love of music and appreciated all genres. Music was woven into so much of his life, from his time as a member of the Des Moines Gay Men's Chorus to the joy he found in playing both the piano and trumpet.

Above all, Jim will be remembered for his kind and loving heart. He was a loyal son, devoted brother, caring uncle, and faithful friend. He deeply adored his nieces and nephews, Stephanie, Jacob, and Owen, and made each of their birthdays special by creating a day just for them, taking them wherever they wanted to go and making memories they will carry forever.

He is survived by his mother, Wilma Torsky; brother, John (Brenda) Torsky; nephew, Jacob (Monica) Torsky; niece, Stephanie (Josh) Obernolte; a great nephew, Owen Torsky; and his special friends: Patty Endriss, Chris Alleman, Pete Hunter, Jeff Williams, Mel Sides, and Rodney Hillebo.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard, and his loving dog and best friend, Barney.

Memorials in Jim's name may be directed to the Polk City Fire Department.
