It is with sorrow and gratitude that we mark the passing of Marie Roberts of Chester, SC — sorrow at the loss, gratitude for the life.

Behind every name is a life, and behind every life are the people who loved it.

Marie held deeply to the Baptist faith — and was, by all accounts, loved by those who knew her best.

Faith is the language some lives are written in. Marie's was one.

Ruby Marie Carter Connor Roberts (92) of 2891 J.E Roberts Road, Chester went home to be with the Lord on May 4, 2026. Born on March 31, 1934 in Madison County, GA, she moved to Chester with her family when she was 8 years old. As long as she was able, Marie travelled to Georgia each year in September for the Carter family reunion. She continued to keep in touch with her GA family through phone calls and Christmas cards. More recently, she looked forward to the Carter Cousins’ reunion in October.A longtime employee of Springs Industries, Marie worked in the Personnel Office at Springsteen. After her retirement, she returned to Springs for brief periods when they needed assistance.Marie was a voracious reader. Her favorite genres were westerns and murder mysteries. She was rarely without a book in hand or nearby. Before her health declined, she tended a huge garden each year and graciously shared the harvest with family and friends. She loved canning and freezing the vegetables and was known for her famous “chow-chow”. Even after they were unable to manage a large garden, Marie and Kirk always had a few tomatoes, peppers and eggplants planted each year. Marie was an excellent cook and adored cooking for her family. She was especially happy when the family all gathered together to eat on Sundays or special occasions. She always had more than enough food prepared for anyone that came and all were welcome.Marie possessed a feisty personality, a great sense of humor, a stubborn streak a mile wide and absolutely no rhythm, much to her disappointment. Some of her most treasured times were shopping trips to Columbia with Ann, Jeannie and Shirley where they would laugh until they cried, and the yearly family trips to the beach.Marie has a special love for her great-grandchildren, ice cream and Pekingese dogs. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church until her health prevented her from attending. She continued to enjoy visits from her pastor and church members. She is survived by her children, Brian Connor (Dell) and Ann Shirley (Lewis), step-daughter, Marie Nunnery (Eddie), grandchildren, Josh Bagley (Candice), Ben Nunnery (Hanna), Rebecca Partain (Eric), and Maverick Farley (Denay), her sister Shirley Moore, 10 great-grand-children and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Howell and Carria Carter, her first husband and the father of her children, Frank Connor, her second husband, Kirk Roberts, her daughter, Jeannie Holt, her step-daughter, Terry Roberts, three brothers and four sisters. The family would like to extend a special thanks to her private caregivers and the staff of MUSC Chester Nursing Center for the care and attention Marie received.
