It is with sorrow and gratitude that we mark the passing of Nancy L. Earnest of Hamlet, IN — sorrow at the loss, gratitude for the life.
Behind every name is a life, and behind every life are the people who loved it.
Nancy spent her working life as ['many years as a home healthcare caregiver'] — and was, by all accounts, loved by those who knew her best.
A parent's life is measured, in part, by the lives she shaped.
Nancy L. Earnest, 81, of Hamlet, passed away on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at Northwest Health–Porter Hospital following an illness.
She was born on December 28, 1944, in Hamlet to the late Wilbur and Rachel (Taylor) Clemmons. Nancy was a lifelong resident of the Hamlet community, where she built a life centered on faith, family, and caring for others.
Nancy worked for many years as a home healthcare caregiver, a role that perfectly reflected her compassionate and selfless nature. She was a longtime attendee of Davis Wesleyan Church and lived her life as a faithful witness to the Lord, sharing her faith with kindness and sincerity-even in her final days with her healthcare providers.
Above all, Nancy absolutely adored her family. She was a deeply devoted and family-oriented woman who found her greatest joy in her children and grandchildren. Nancy ran an in-home day care for many years, where she lovingly cared for many children. Some still kept in touch with her many years later, a testimony to the impact she left on their lives. She especially cherished the time spent attending her grandchildren's sporting events and school activities, always present with encouragement, love, and pride.
Nancy had a warm and caring soul, paired with a wonderful sense of humor. She loved to laugh, joke, and bring smiles to those around her. She had a special love for children and a natural way of making others feel welcomed and cared for.
Creativity was also a big part of Nancy's life. She enjoyed needlepoint and knitting, often crafting with care and love. She had a passion for drama and the arts, writing plays and participating in drama club, and she thoroughly enjoyed attending theatrical productions. In quieter moments, she found happiness in playing games, especially cards and dice, and she had a deep affection for animals.
She is survived by her loving children, Pam (Kevin) Thompson and Brian (Kassandra) Earnest; her cherished grandchildren, Kyle and Paige Thompson, and Alexus and Kinley Earnest; two sisters, Imogene Clemmons and Monica Dean; and one brother, Walt (Kathy) Clemmons. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Maizie and Willie.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. CDT on Monday, April 27, 2026, at Rannells Funeral Home, Hamlet Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Fletcher Cemetery. The family would also like to ask you to please join our family for a pitch in dinner at the James Hardesty Davis Township Community Building/Hamlet Fire Station following the burial service.
Nancy will be remembered for her loving heart, her playful spirit, and the deep devotion she had for her family. Her legacy of kindness, faith, and love will live on in all who knew her.
