It is with sorrow and gratitude that we mark the passing of Roberta W. Jackson of Scotch Plains, NJ — sorrow at the loss, gratitude for the life.
The chapters of her life were many; these are some of them.
Roberta held deeply to the Baptist faith — and was, by all accounts, loved by those who knew her best.
The traditions Roberta loved will continue to hold those she loved.
Roberta W. Jackson entered eternal rest on May 1, 2026, after a beautiful and fulfilling life of 99 years. Born on April 28, 1927, to Dennis T. Williams, Sr. and Margaret Williams, Roberta was one of five children and a woman whose life reflected strength, creativity, and devotion to family and community.
Roberta graduated from Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C., and later earned an Associate Degree in Business from Bronx Community College. Throughout her life, she embraced several professional roles, working as a Nurse's Aide, Bank Teller and Manager, and Office Manager for Off Track Betting.
On July 13, 1959, she married Benny Jackson in Richmond, Virginia. Together they shared a life rooted in commitment and family. Roberta was the proud mother of Mark N. Williams and Sheryn K. Williams.
For 30 years, Roberta made her home in Plainfield, New Jersey, where she became a devoted member of St. John's Baptist Church in Scotch Plains. She found joy in artistic expression and generously shared her talents with others. She loved painting at the Plainfield Senior Center and knitted clothing for underprivileged infants and children, always giving from her heart.
Roberta leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Sheryn K. Williams; one brother, Wayne Bethea; five grandchildren: Joi Williams, Christopher Marks, Dawud Walker, Taj Williams, and Teyana Williams; three nieces: Trina Martin, Laura Williams, and Garnetta Butler; two nephews: Roy Williams and Larry Williams; along with a host of great-grandchildren, grandnieces, grandnephews, extended family, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Benny Jackson; her son, Mark N. Williams; her granddaughter, Monique Ribeiro-Ayeh; her sisters, Margaret Williams and Christine Okang; and her brother, Dennis T. Williams, Jr.
Roberta touched countless lives with her vibrant spirit, wisdom, and unmistakable personality. Her candid words, loving heart, and mischievous smile will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
