After a life of love and quiet grace, Gary Joseph Elliott of Marrero, LA has passed.

Below, a small portrait of a life that will not soon be forgotten.

The work of a parent is rarely finished — it lives on in the children he loved.

Gary Joseph Elliott, age 74, departed from this life on April 20, 2026. He was born on November 21, 1951 to Amos Joseph Elliott (6/7/1920 - 7/27/1978), who had one brother, Angus Elliott; and Bertha Mae Barrios Elliott (4/30/1921 - 9/25/2001), who had six siblings. Gary had one sister, Barbara Elliott Glass (12/21/1943 - 1/12/2017), and one niece, Boni Glass (10/3/1966 - 8/11/2023). His grandfathers, father, and uncles served in WWII. He grew up in Westwego, LA, and resided in the Greater New Orleans area all his life.Gary is survived by his two children, Laurène Ashley Elliott-Deyris and Alyssa Cristen Elliott Ramos, and his two beloved grandchildren, Kaylee Alexis McMillion and Arya Lily Elliott Ramos, who called him “Papa”.Gary was a retired teacher from Fisher High School in Lafitte, LA, where he taught Industrial Arts (wood shop) and History. He also spent many years working in construction and renovating houses around the city. Prior to that he worked for Delta Airlines and the Waterford 3 plant.Gary had a lifelong passion for woodworking and enjoyed creating many beautiful carpentry projects. In his spare time he loved biking, fishing, playing, and singing songs from the 70s on his guitar, kayaking, sailing, keeping up with friends, and spending time with his kids and grandkids. He attended Archbishop Shaw Catholic High School in Marrero, University of New Orleans, and graduated from LSU Baton Rouge with a Bachelors in History in 1975.Gary will be remembered for his sense of humor, his many talents, his love for Cajun food, and the love he had for his “goons”.Gary's Memorial Service will be held at Mothe Funeral home at 7040 Lapalco Blvd. in Marrero on May 29, 2026 at 11am (Visitation starts at 9am). Inurnment will take place thereafter at Gates of Heaven Mausoleum in Westwego.
