It is with deep sorrow and heartfelt remembrance that we announce the passing of Marija Lokmic, who left us on May 2, 2026, in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 86. Born on September 10, 1939, in Jajce, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Marija’s journey through life was marked by resilience, love, and dedication.Marija was raised in Banja Luka, where she completed both her high school education and college degree. Her early years were shaped by the close bonds of family and community until the onset of war disrupted their lives. In 1994, Marija and her family relocated to Zadar, Croatia. Seeking peace and new opportunities, they later immigrated to Des Moines in 2000, where she made her home until her passing.A devoted professional, Marija served as an administrator for social services, a role through which she touched many lives with compassion and unwavering commitment. Marija’s passions were many and varied. In her younger days, she delighted in dancing, embracing the joy and freedom it brought her. She was also skilled in needlepoint and found peace and satisfaction in tending to her garden. After retirement, Marija’s world revolved around the people she loved most—her cherished family and grandchildren. A passionate cook, she enjoyed experimenting with new recipes, delighting those around her with her culinary creations.She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving husband of Des Moines, Vladimir Lokmic, who stood by her side until the very end in their home. Together with Vladimir, Marija’s life was graced by the presence of her son Darko Lokmic and his wife Danijela Cejvan-Lokmic of Johnston; her son Marijan Lokmic and his wife Zana of London, Ontario; and her beloved grandchildren Matteo Lokmic and Emma Lokmic of Johnston, and Robert and Gregory Lokmic of London, Ontario. Their love and support remain a testament to her enduring legacy.Marija was preceded in death by her dear parents Anka and Zvonko Pastuhovic, as well as her brothers Mijo and Franjo Pastuhovic, whose memories she carried with her always.Visitation to honor and remember Marija will take place on Friday, May 8, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Ernst Funeral Home, located at 80 NE Dartmoor Drive, Waukee, Iowa. Family and friends will meet at 1:30 p.m. following the visitation, at Glendale Cemetery, 4909 University Ave, Des Moines, Iowa for a brief graveside service committal and burial.
