After a life of love and quiet grace, Phyllis Sprecher of Madison, WI has passed.

The following words honor a life that mattered to many.

Phyllis held deeply to the Lutheran faith — and was, by all accounts, loved by those who knew her best.

Those who live by belief leave a different kind of mark.

Phyllis (Willingham) Sprecher, age 94, passed away peacefully at Attic Angel Place on May 1, 2026, from complications of dementia. She was born on June 15, 1931, in New Albany, Indiana, the daughter of David and Annarene (Norman) Willingham. Raised in a family of entrepreneurs, inventors, and artists, she was creative and intelligent, graduating from high school at the top of her class. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Indiana, where she was a member of Alpha Phi sorority and would go on to meet the love of her life, Peter Sprecher. Soon after they married, Pete was deployed to Korea, serving in the Air Force for a year. A business opportunity would bring them to Madison, and it was here that the couple would end up raising their three children and forging lifelong friendships.Known for her sharp wit, enthusiasm, and loyalty, neighbors sought Phyllis out as both a shoulder to cry on and a source of humorous advice. She was the life of any party, always quick with a joke. Her unique imagination was evident in everything she put her hand to -- from costumes to greeting cards to one-of-a-kind centerpieces -- and if she couldn't find something she wanted, she made it herself. When her kids were older, she returned to work as a medical technologist, mixing allergy extracts for patients at Quisling Clinic. She enjoyed a variety of activities, both introspective (daily crossword puzzles) and social (bridge club, tai chi classes, golf outings with her husband). By far, she considered motherhood to be her greatest achievement. Her children will always be grateful for the lessons she instilled through her life's example: to ignore outside pressure and think for themselves, to march proudly to their own drum, and to always do the right thing.Deeply spiritual, she was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church for more than five decades. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Patricia Dennison, and her brother David Willingham. She was greatly loved and will be missed by her husband of 72 years, her daughters Jill and Karen (Los Angeles), her son Jeffrey, and her daughter-in-law Kelly (Atlanta). A private burial was held at Forest Hill Cemetery.I am the resurrection and the life: he that believes in me, though he may die, yet shall live. And whosoever believes in me shall never die. John 11:25-26Cress Funeral & Cremation Services3610 Speedway Rd    Madison608-238-3434
