Raymond Old Dude "Old Dude" Cornwell of Morganfield, KY has gone home, leaving behind a circle of those who loved him.

Below, a small portrait of a life that will not soon be forgotten.

We measure lives in love, not minutes.

Raymond G. "Old Dude" Cornwell, age 95, of Morganfield, KY, passed away on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at the Lucy Smith King Care Center in Henderson, KY.

Born on February 12, 1931, in Henshaw, KY, Raymond was the son of R.G. "Dan" and Rose Cornwell. He grew up in Union County and carried with him the values of hard work, humility, and a deep appreciation for the outdoors-qualities that shaped his entire life.

Raymond spent many years working as a heavy equipment operator for Alvey Toombs Construction, finally retiring from Peabody Coal Company as a heavy equipment operator, where he was known for his steady hand, strong work ethic, and quiet dependability. His coworkers respected him, and many considered him a mentor. The nickname "Old Dude," given affectionately by friends and family, reflected both his good natured personality and the easygoing humor that followed him everywhere he went.

Outside of work, Raymond found joy in simple, meaningful pursuits. He was an avid woodworker who could turn a piece of lumber into something useful, beautiful, or both. He loved being outdoors, especially when he had a fishing pole in hand or was out hunting. Quail hunting, in particular, was a lifelong passion-one that connected him to the land and to the people he shared those early mornings with.

Raymond lived a long, full life marked by quiet strength, steady presence, and a deep appreciation for the world around him. His legacy lives on in the stories told, the craftsmanship he left behind, and the many lives he touched over his 95 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Barbara Mattingly Cornwell; grandson Clinton Cornwell; infant daughter; sisters Margaret Dempsey, Edna Bealmear, Maebelle Moore, and Beverly June Gray.

Survivors include 2 daughters Jennifer (Gary) Thornsberry of Sturgis, KY and Paula (Gary) Horne of Evansville, IN; son Ronnie (Linda) Cornwell of Morganfield, KY; sister Gladys Snyder of Sturgis, KY and caregiver Jonetta Ebelhar; 6 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.
