With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Jane F. Hartmann of Swampscott, MA.

What follows is not the whole story, but a thread of it.

Jane spent her working life as ['stewardess for TWA'] — and was, by all accounts, loved by those who knew her best.

What Jane gave her children, they will give to theirs.

Jane (Schiffmacher) Hartmann, of Swampscott, passed away on May 4th, 2026 at the age of 88. Jane was born in Queens, New York, the daughter of the late Charles and Helen Schiffmacher. Jane graduated from St. John's University where she was active in the choral society and theater. She worked as a stewardess for TWA, and as an English and Special Education teacher for the Salem Public Schools. After raising three children in the town of Swampscott, Jane and her husband Jim retired to Boston, where Jane became a community garden and neighborhood activist and was invited to throw out the first pitch at the Red Sox game. She and her husband were avid world travelers. Jane was a great lover of the arts and enjoyed attending the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Huntington Theater. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, James Hartmann; her children, Jennifer Pascarella, John Hartmann, and Eric Hartmann; brother Charles Schiffmacher and sister Barbara Ind; grandchildren Nicholas, Emily, Charles, Robert and April Hartmann.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a graveside service at 11 am on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at Swampscott Cemetery, 400 Essex St, Swampscott.
