With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Jeanette Ann Lerssen of Manning, IA.

Below, the simplest tribute: the truth of a life as it was lived.

Jeanette spent her working life as ['an egg plant in Carroll grading eggs'] and held deeply to the Lutheran faith — and was, by all accounts, loved by those who knew her best.

What Jeanette believed shaped how she loved.

Jeanette Ann Lerssen, one of nine children born to Christopher and Marie (Hein) Subbert, was born November 10, 1936, in Carroll, Iowa. She grew up in Lidderdale, was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and attended school in Carroll. She graduated from Carroll High School with the Class of 1956. Jeanette worked at Woolworth’s Clothing Store in Carroll following her schooling. On February 27, 1960, Jeanette was united in marriage with Donald LeRoy Lerssen at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll. Two boys were born to this union. Jeanette worked at an egg plant in Carroll grading eggs. She and Don lived in Carroll for a short time before moving to Dedham when the boys were young. The family later settled in Manning in their current home on the corner of East and Third Streets, where the boys could attend school without riding a bus.Jeanette later worked at L.R. Nelson Manufacturing and Wells Manufacturing plants. She also worked part-time sorting corn for Garst and Thomas in the fall. In 1992, she began working at Burger King in Carroll, a job she truly enjoyed because of her co-workers.In her spare time, Jeanette enjoyed playing cards, especially Tic and Rummy. She loved baking Christmas cookies and candies and had a fondness for desserts. She also enjoyed canning vegetables. She did everything for her children and grandchildren and never missed any of their activities, from basketball games to swimming meets.Don died in 2013, and Jeanette continued to live in her home. Jeanette died on Monday, May 4, 2026, at Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning at the age of 89 years, five months, and 24 days.In addition to her husband, Donald Lerssen, Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents, Christopher and Marie Subbert; siblings: Bernice Launderville, Howard Subbert, LaVonne Bock, Wayne Subbert, Arlene Kusel, Donna Mae White, and Doris Subbert, and Paul Subbert, both in infancy.Jeanette is survived by her two sons, Neil Lerssen of Wall Lake and Kurt Lerssen of Manning; five grandchildren: Paul Lerssen, Tami Jo (Dusty) Elston, Nicki (D’Andre) Wiggins, Jarred Lerssen, and Kennedy Lerssen; seven great-grandchildren: Alexis Lerssen, Rillie Elston, Kylie Lerssen, Morgan Sterh, Gaige Lerssen, Emarie Wiggins, and Daine Wiggins; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.Visitation, with family greeting friends, will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 11, 2026, at Ohde Funeral Home in Manning, followed by a 2:00 p.m. graveside service at Manning Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family.
