With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Marvin Richard "Marv" Helmer of St. Johns, MI.

Below, the simplest tribute: the truth of a life as it was lived.

Honor is not a word lightly given. Marvin earned it.

Marvin Richard "Marv" Helmer, a longtime resident of St. Johns, Michigan, died on May 4, 2026, at the age of 83.

Marv was born on February 25, 1943, in Bay City, Michigan, the son of Enos "Bart" Helmer and Almeda E. (Smith) Helmer. He grew up in Barryton and Six Lakes, Michigan, and was a graduate of Lakeview High School.

Following high school, Marv enlisted in the United States Army, serving his country honorably from 1961 to 1964. After returning home, he worked as a painter before beginning a long and dedicated career at the General Motors Oldsmobile plant in Lansing. It was there that he met the love of his life, Christine, through her mother. The two were married on May 16, 1970, and went on to share 56 wonderful years together.

Marv retired from General Motors in 1995 after 30 years of service. Outside of work, he was known for his passion for restoring antique John Deere tractors, at one time owning a remarkable collection of over 200. He also enjoyed deer hunting and fishing over the years, especially alongside his brother, Hector.

Marv was known for his ornery sense of humor, his generous spirit, and his willingness to do anything for anyone. He gave freely of himself and was deeply appreciated by all who knew him. For over forty-one years, Marv and Chris made their home on Francis Road, where they welcomed family and friends to countless gatherings in Marv's barn. When Marv opened the barn doors, people came-drawn by laughter, friendship, and his love of hosting. He cherished those moments of camaraderie, whether at home or sharing stories and a Busch Light at the South Riley Tavern.

In addition to his beloved wife, Chris, Marv is survived by his daughter, Vicki Theis (Steve Hawker); his son, Doug Helmer; his grandchildren, Ricki (Jessica) Theis and Christopher (Darby) Theis; and his great-grandchildren, Grayson, Oliver, Harper, and Nora. He is also survived by his siblings, Joyce Mayer, Dan (Ginny) Helmer, Ed Helmer, and Barb Helmer; his sister-in-law, Cheryl (Bob) Hicks; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Keith "Hector" Helmer.

Visitation will be held at McGeehan Funeral Home, Keck-Coleman Chapel, 1500 Waterford Parkway, St. Johns, on Saturday, May 9, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. Military Honors will be rendered at 4:00 PM.

Memorial contributions may be made in Marv's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
