With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Vera Johnson of Federal Way, WA.
These few paragraphs cannot hold a life, but they may carry a memory.
Quiet kindness echoes longest.
Vera Johnson, a beloved mother, grandmother and friend passed away peacefully on, April 18, 2026, in Federal Way, Washington. She was 80 years old. Born on May 19, 1945, in Seattle, Washington. Vera lived a life rooted in faith and family.
The eldest daughter of Minister Berta Newson, Vera grew up surrounded by the love and guidance of her family. Her mother was the first born of 18 children to John Henry, and Julia Clarena Newson, of Powhatan, Louisiana. Vera carried forward this legacy of strength and devotion throughout her life. A faithful believer in Jesus Christ, Vera accepted Him as her Lord and Savior early in life. Her unwavering faith was a cornerstone of her journey and a source of inspiration to those who knew her.
Vera found joy in simple pleasures. She loved knitting slippers in her favorite shades of pink. A pastime that reflected her warmth and creativity. She also cherished the camaraderie and activities organized by the Hallmark Manor Nursing Facility, where she spent time engaging with others in meaningful ways. Shopping trips were another delight for Vera, offering moments of connection and enjoyment. She loved music, from gospel, soul, country, to rock & roll. She spent hours on end listening, reflecting, meditating. It was Vera's means to achieve mental clarity, calm, and emotional balance.
Vera leaves behind a loving family who will cherish her memory. She is survived by her son, Nathaniel Mayes; her grandsons, Nathaniel Quartez Mayes, Na'Sean Elijah Mayes, Na'Siah Edward Mayes all of Seattle, Washington; her nephew, Edward Morris of Renton, Washington; her uncle, Donzell Newson of Shreveport, Louisiana; a special cousin, Patricia (Joe)Yanders of Moreno Valley, California; another uncle, Clarence Clark of Moreno Valley, California; and her dear friend, Linda Battles of Seattle, Washington. Additionally, she is remembered fondly by a host of 5th generation cousins and friends whose lives she touched throughout the years.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Minister Berta Newson; her sisters, Dorothy Witfield of Pacifica, California; Eltra Terry of Seattle, Washington; uncles, Alonzo Newson, Fred (Larry) Newson, Augusta (Dillie) Newson all of Shreveport, Louisiana. Henry (Coudie) Newson, Ben (Joseph) Newson, Charles (Chuck) Edward Newson all of Seattle, Washington. Jimmy Newson, and James (Curley) Newson of Los Angeles, California. As well as aunts, Ola Mae Newson-Clark of Moreno Valley, California; Ruth Newson-Bailey of Seattle, Washington; Ethel Lee Newson-Winchester of Bakersfield, California.
Vera's life was one defined by love, love for God, love for family, and love for the simple joys that brought people together. Her memory will live on through the countless lives she touched with her kindness and faith.
May those who knew Vera find comfort in remembering the warmth she brought into their lives. A funeral service will be held on May 13, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 12:15 PM at Bonney-Watson Funeral Home 16445 International Boulevard. Sea-tac, Washington. Graveside services will be held at Evergreen Washelli Abbey View 3601 Alaska Road, Brier, Washington. The family will join to share a meal at the close of the services.
