Shirley Charlene Lewis of Princeton, IL, has passed away, leaving behind a family and community who loved her dearly.

These are the contours of a life that meant a great deal to many.

Some legacies are not written; they walk the earth, named after those who came before.

Princeton - Shirley Charlene "Stub" Lewis passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at Liberty Village/Manor Court in Princeton, Illinois.

Shirley aka Stub was born in Tiskilwa, Illinois, to the late Albert and Agnes (Morris) Opsal. She was a proud graduate of Princeton High School, Class of 1955. On June 16, 1956, she married the love of her life, Homer F. "Fred" Lewis, in Princeton, where they built a life centered on family and community.

Shirley dedicated many years to her work, first as an operator at GTE for 10 years, and later at Harper Wyman, where she worked for 20 years before retiring.

She found joy in life's simple pleasures-golfing, bowling, dancing (which she fondly called "boot kicking"), tending to her flower gardens, and hunting for treasures at garage sales. Above all, Shirley cherished time spent with her grandchildren, creating unforgettable memories that will be treasured for generations.

Survived by her children: Sherie (Barry) Portman of Princeton, IL; Dan Lewis of Princeton, IL; and Tim (Annie) Lewis of Princeton, IL. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren: Jeremie Carlson, Blake, Tim, Tony, Dominic, Nicky, and Alex Lewis, all of Princeton, IL; Sara Portman of St. Louis; and Ben Lewis of Pennsylvania.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred Lewis, brother Albert Jr, sister Patricia Becker, beloved grandson Jude Gerard Lewis, nieces Brenda Harris and Charlene Jaggers.
