James Jefferson Jr., a cherished husband, father, and friend, was born on November 18, 1951, in Des Moines, Iowa, to James Alvin Jefferson Sr. and Katherine Ashby. Growing up in Des Moines, he was nurtured by the close-knit community and attended Des Moines Public Schools, proudly graduating from North High School in 1969. Following high school, James began his career with Northwestern Bell, embarking on a journey marked by dedication and hard work.

On October 14, 1972, James married Betty Lewis, his beloved partner and the love of his life. Together, they built a beautiful family blessed with three sons: James III, Jabbar, and Jarreau. James was a devoted husband and a wonderful father who treasured every moment spent with his family.

An avid sports enthusiast, James held a special place in his heart for the Celtics and the Steelers. He generously gave his time as a Little League Baseball coach, sharing his passion for the game and inspiring countless young players. Above all, James loved being surrounded by his family and was known as a good man with a warm spirit.

James peacefully passed away on April 30, 2026, at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, his sister Barbara Greene, his brother Greg Leaper, and his brother-in-law Wesley Beechum.

He leaves behind his devoted wife, Betty Jefferson; his sons James III (Kristi), Jabbar Antwon, and Jarreau (Cassandra) Jefferson; nine beloved grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his sister Carla Beechum; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will forever hold him in their hearts.

James Jefferson Jr.'s life was a testament to love, family, and community, and his memory will continue to inspire all who knew him.
