It is with sorrow and gratitude that we mark the passing of Gene Wintermote of Shoshoni, WY — sorrow at the loss, gratitude for the life.
Some lives speak quietly; his is one such story.
Few who serve speak of it freely; those who knew him understood.
Gene Audra Wintermote, 83, of Shoshoni, Wyoming, passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2026, in Shoshoni. He was born on January 24, 1943, in Lander, Wyoming, to Lawrence Audra Wintermote and Eugenia May (Wall) Wintermote.
Gene married Janet Ruth "Jan" Judson on January 22, 1965, in San Antonio, Texas. Together they moved back and forth between Wyoming and Ohio before finally settling in Shoshoni, where they made their home, raised their family, and lived happily together.
Gene attended Syracuse University and proudly served in the United States Air Force as a Russian linguist. He worked in the Gas Hills for Union Carbide for 30 years. After retiring, he went on to work for Star Trucking in the oil fields. He also served his community for many years as a volunteer fireman.
Gene enjoyed spending time with his family, working on cars, square dancing with his wife Jan, hunting, sitting on his front porch, and listening to his sons play music.
He is survived by his sons, John and Lucy Wintermote, Gene and Kerry Wintermote, and Judson and Shawna Wintermote; daughter, Jennifer Wintermote; 14 grandchildren; 29great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jan Wintermote; daughter, Diane Gilbert; son-in-law, Eric Gilbert; grandson, Patrick Wintermote; great-grandson, Andrew Wintermote; daughter-in-law, Beth Wintermote.
A memorial service will be held at the Shoshoni Senior Center on Saturday, May 16, 2026., at 2:00 P.M.
