It is with sorrow and gratitude that we mark the passing of Salvador Flores of Mercedes, TX — sorrow at the loss, gratitude for the life.
The chapters of his life were many; these are some of them.
Salvador held deeply to the Catholic faith — and was, by all accounts, loved by those who knew him best.
Faith is the language some lives are written in. Salvador's was one.
Mercedes- Salvador Hernandez Flores, 82, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, May 1, 2026. He was born on January 18, 1944, in Donna, Texas, to Manuel and Viviana (Hernandez) Flores.
Salvador married the love of his life, Yolanda Gonzalez, on April 22, 1965. Together, they built a life centered on faith, hard work, and family, raising eleven children. In the early years, Salvador was a devoted provider, becoming a truck driver and later traveling north during the summer months as a migrant worker to support his growing family. Salvador fully devoted his support for his family, while Yolanda lovingly cared for their children at home.
Their beautiful love story was forever changed with Yolanda's untimely passing in 1994. Faced with unimaginable loss, Salvador stepped into the role of both father and mother with strength and determination, raising his children with unwavering commitment and love.
Salvador was a man of integrity and discipline. A firm but fair father, he instilled strong values in his children through his example of hard work, humility, and generosity. He gave freely to others, often putting the needs of those around him before his own, regardless of circumstance.
Outside of work, Salvador found his greatest joy in time spent with family. His home and ranch were places of laughter and celebration. He loved loud music-especially corridos-dancing, and sharing a few beers surrounded by those he loved. A devoted fan of the Dallas Cowboys, he rarely missed a game. Birthdays and gatherings were always lively, filled with food, music, and the warmth of family.
Above all, Salvador was a man of deep faith. He and Yolanda were married at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, where they raised their family. Later in life, he attended a non-denominational church, and on April 21, 2024, Salvador was baptized-reaffirming his faith in Jesus Christ with confidence and peace. His testimony became a lasting legacy to his children, grandchildren, and all who knew him.
Salvador is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Yolanda Gonzalez Flores; his parents, Manuel and Viviana Flores; and his brothers, Moises Hernandez Flores, Candelario Hernandez Flores, and Manuel Hernandez Flores Jr.
He is survived by his children, Salvador Flores Jr. (Sylvia), Martin Flores (Zeneth), Ruben Flores, Melinda Flores, Albert Flores, Yolanda Martinez (Luis), Abel Flores (Belica), David Flores (Tamra), Steven Flores (Daisy Zuniga), Daniel Flores (Marisela), and Michael Flores (Nitza); his siblings, Raul Hernandez Flores (Armida Veraskiki), Juan Hernandez Flores, Margarita Hernandez Flores (Alfonso Castillo), Maribel Joaquina Hernandez Flores (Ismael Rodriguez†), and Leticia Hernandez Flores (Juan Antonio Herrera); 37 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation to celebrate Salvador's life will be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7 pm, at McCaleb Funeral Home. A celebration of life will take place on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., followed by a graveside service at Sacred Park Cemetery in Mercedes, where Salvador will be laid to rest.
