It is with sorrow and gratitude that we mark the passing of Steven Brent Hillyard of Des Moines, IA — sorrow at the loss, gratitude for the life.

Steven Brent Hillyard, age 67, of Des Moines, passed away on May 1, 2026.
He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy, who was his partner and companion through life's many seasons; his mother, Nita West; his aunt, Nila Williams; his brother, Tim (Andrea), and their children, Shannon, Brett, and Clay; sister-in-law Judy (Keith) Odem and their child, Heather, and her daughter, Samantha; brother-in-law Robert (Sabra) Dessauer and their daughters, Taylor (William) Carney, Megan, and Madison; nieces and nephews Jody (Patrick) Henkenius and her children, Nathan and Ellie Wilson; Andrew (Melanie) Dessauer and their daughter, Abby; and Katie (Rick) Gravy and their sons, Sam and Jack. His family will remember him for his presence, support, and the special role he played in their lives. He is also survived by his beloved dog, Jackson, who was a loyal companion and brought him great comfort and joy.
Steve was preceded in death by his father William Hillyard, Step father Worth West, Uncle Thomas Williams and Brother in law William Dessauer
Steven will be remembered for his character, his quiet strength, and the impact he had on those around him. He was a fun-loving person who enjoyed making others laugh and bringing lightness to those around him. A devoted fan of the Chicago Bears, cheering them on with loyalty and pride, even in the bad years. He found great joy in the outdoors and especially loved fishing and hunting, where he spent many meaningful moments doing what he enjoyed most.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A celebration of life will be held on May 7th, 2026 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at Iles Westover Chapel.
