Phyllis Mayfield of McMurray, PA, has passed away, leaving behind a family and community who loved her dearly.

What you read below is one part of a life lived with quiet purpose.

Phyllis spent her working life as ['administrative assistant to various executives'] — and was, by all accounts, loved by those who knew her best.

A name is a small thing to hold a whole life.

Phyllis Currey Mayfield, age 90, of McMurray, Pennsylvania, passed away on April 24, 2026, with her loving husband, son and caregivers by her side.

Phyllis was born on May 7, 1935, in Clendenin, West Virginia. She grew up in West Virginia with her parents U.L. and Nona Smith and brothers Harold and Paul. She graduated from Kermit High School in 1951 at only 16 years of age.

She married her husband, Melvin Litman Mayfield, on March 14, 1981, and they recently marked 45 years of marriage. Phyllis and Mel were devoted to each other. They loved dogs and enjoyed many years of companionship with their Shih Tzus Ginger, Ava and Greta.

In her professional career, Phyllis worked as an administrative assistant to various executives. She excelled at her work and was well-liked and respected by those she worked with.

After retiring, Phyllis served for many years as President of the Homeowners Association of Williamsburg Commons in McMurray. She loved her community very much.

In her personal life, she loved shopping at J.Crew, eating at Mitchell's Fish Market, and spoiling her grandkids when they came for their yearly visits. She loved the beach and spent several summer vacations on the Jersey Shore with her son and his family. She also got to fulfill her dream of international travel starting at the age of 81 with several trips to Europe with her son and his family. She visited London, Cambridge, Paris, and Venice, where she ate chocolate gelato and sipped Amaretto. Most importantly, for anyone wishing to know more about her, she loved her family fiercely and unconditionally.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Mel, her son, Ralph Currey, of Ridgewood, New Jersey, his wife Nancy, her grandchildren, Mary-Kate and Ben, and her nieces. She was preceded in death by her brothers and her beloved grandson, Nicholas (Nick) Currey, who passed away in 2005.

Phyllis's remains will be interred in Valleau Cemetery in Ridgewood, New Jersey, alongside her grandson Nick.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Nick Currey Fund at CureSearch for Children's Cancer, www.curesearch.org/nickcurreyfund. Phyllis and Mel were staunch supporters of this research fund established in her grandson Nick's memory, which is devoted to finding a cure for Ewing sarcoma.
