With heavy hearts, we share the passing of James "Wayne" Scott of Evansville, IN.

What follows is written with love, by those who knew him best.

There are losses that teach us the weight of a life.

James Wayne Scott, 88, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away on April 29, 2026, in the city where he was born on December 4, 1937. He lived a long and meaningful life marked by devotion to family, hard work, service, and the quiet strength that earned him the respect and affection of all who knew him.

He was the beloved husband of Connie Scott for 70 years, and their marriage stood as a lasting example of love, loyalty, and partnership. Together, they built a family that was the center of his world. He was a proud father to Kevin Scott and his wife Cynthia, Troy Scott and his wife Maria Ferrer-Scott, and Vickie Aragon and her husband Nery. He was also a cherished grandfather to Aaron Scott, Daniel Scott, Stephany Summers, Michelle O'Neal, Alex Ferrer, David Ferrer and Eric Ferrer. He held a special place in his heart for his great-grandchildren DeAyron, Mikyn, Rielyn, Trinidee, Terry L Jr, Alana, and Alex Jr. He was preceded in death by his grandson Zachary Scott, brothers Larry Scott, Frank Diebler, Fred Diebler and Johnny Diebler. He is survived by his sisters Marcia Barnet and Debbie Neighbors, his brother Dallas Scott, and many extended family members who will treasure his memory. He was the son of the late James Earl and Frances Scott.

James spent much of his life working with his hands and taking pride in a job well done as a master electrician. After years of dedicated service at Whirlpool, he began working for AMAX Coal in Chandler, and he also served his community as a volunteer firefighter for the Chandler Fire Department. His work ethic, reliability, and willingness to help others reflected the kind of man he was. He was also a member of the UMWA and, in his high school years, served as a lifeguard, showing even then a natural sense of responsibility and care for others.

James was known as "Muppet" or "Scotty" by all of his work friends, names spoken with warmth and familiarity by colleagues and friends alike. He was generous, selfless, and thoughtful, and he carried those qualities into every part of his life. He was the kind of man who gave of himself without hesitation and who made others feel valued through his steady presence and kind spirit.

James enjoyed the simple pleasures that made life rich. He loved fishing, especially for bass and in the Atlantic Ocean, where he especially enjoyed shark fishing. He also had a fondness for a good key lime pie. Above all else, he loved spending quality time with his family, and those moments together were among his greatest joys. Whether gathered around a table, sharing stories, or simply enjoying one another's company, he found happiness in being surrounded by the people he loved most.

James Wayne Scott will be remembered for his deep faith and dedication to serving Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior. His memory will live on in the hearts of his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, extended family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
