With heavy hearts, we share the passing of John F. Rutter of Evansville, IN.
What follows is a brief look at the life his family wishes to share.

John F. Rutter, 85, of Evansville, Indiana, went to be with the Lord on April 22, 2026, at Linda E. White Hospice House, surrounded by his loving family. He was born October 15, 1940, in Mt. Carmel, Illinois to Harvey Cyril "Sid" and Christina Bernadine (Banks) Rutter.
In his youth, John was a member of a traveling tumbling team, earning multiple awards. John was a 1958 graduate of Mt. Carmel High School.
During his professional career, John served as a mail carrier with the United States Postal Service. He began in Chicago, Illinois, as a railway mail clerk before transitioning to a local letter carrier. Over a career spanning more than 25 years, he worked in Champaign, Illinois; Austin, Texas; and Evansville, Indiana. In the early 1960s, John also owned and operated a Shell service station in Mt. Carmel, Illinois.
John was a devoted family man who cherished time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Until his health declined, he rarely missed a sporting event, recital, or school function. He enjoyed documenting family life and milestones through photography and video. He also enjoyed gardening and baking and was especially known for the homemade bread he perfected over the years. John had a gift for turning everyday moments into comedic gold, often at the center of a circle, keeping everyone in stitches with his humor.
A talented artist, John enjoyed painting,and singing, particularly songs by Elvis Presley, and often performed at local events and gatherings. He loved playing cards and, alongside his wife, competed in local Texas Hold'em tournaments. One of his wins earned him a seat at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. Among his many interests, his greatest passion was restoring classic Corvettes. His skill and craftsmanship were well known among collectors, with many seeking him out to restore or purchase vehicles.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn K. Rutter; his children, Cindy (Dan) Morel, Brad Rutter (Will Bruce), Chris (Dan) Patterson, Scott (Brandi) Shelton, and Tamara (John) Skinner; his grandchildren, Allie (Josh) Bertram, Rachel Wigginton, Brady and Emilie Patterson, Brittany Skinner, Katelyn (Anthony) Schantz, Hunter and Houston Sullenger, and Savannah Greulich, Daniel Bruce (Maggie); and his great-grandchildren, Aubrey Bertram, Weston and Jaemyn Wigginton, Jasper Whitlock, Anthony "AJ" Schantz, and Oliver, Orion, and Oakley Sullenger, and Scarlett, Brooks and Rhett. He is also survived by his sister, Louise Acree (Charles), as well as many nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Charles Rutter, Mary Jo Gatewood, and Shirley Jean Healy.
A celebration of life will be held Friday, May 1, at 12:00 PM, with visitation from 10:00 AM until the time of service at Sunset Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
