It is with sorrow and gratitude that we mark the passing of Burton "Burt" Shapiro of Rochester, NY — sorrow at the loss, gratitude for the life.

What remains is memory — and the gratitude of those he loved.

What we carry forward is the light others gave us.

Passed away on April 25, 2026, at the age of 89. Predeceased by his parents, Hyman and Rose [Schwartz] Shapiro; and brothers, Arnold Shapiro and Dr. Melvin Shapiro. Survived by his wife of 60 years, Ellen [Rothstein] Shapiro; daughters, Jill Shapiro and Melissa (Mark) Weissman; grandchildren, Ryan and Jordan Weissman; nieces, nephews and a community of dear friends.

Burt retired from the Rochester City School District after 25 years of teaching. Upon retirement from teaching, he owned Burt Shapiro Photography for many years.

Funeral services will be held at a later date.

Donations may be made to a charity of one's choice in Burt's memory.

Brighton Memorial Chapel is honored to serve the family of Burton Shapiro.
